Our vision: a hunger-free Long Island.
Founded in 1980 by the late Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island, and provides to the best of our ability for the humanitarian needs of our community. We provide food when and where it’s needed, while promoting self-sufficiency and public education.
A year-round resource, the recognized regional Food Bank receives, warehouses and distributes 7.45 million pounds of donated and purchased food annually to residents of Nassau and Suffolk County through 590 member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, group homes, day treatment facilities, senior nutrition sites and day care centers. In addition to the network of agencies supported through the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Long Island Cares also offers a diverse array of direct service programs including job development, children’s nutrition programs, veterans services and three satellite store-front locations in Freeport, Lindenhurst and Huntington Station.
